Description
American Standardbred (Pacer)
Ex harness racer, and light hack – now looking for a retirement home.
Problems
He can be nervous in heavy traffic, but he is more confident when hacked out with other horses. Would prefer him to remain a companion (not ridden), but could be brought back into light work if desired (maximum rider 9 stone). Very safe to handle, has never bitten or kicked, is very affectionate once he trusts you. Very friendly, very forgiving and likes the company of other animals and people. He is a pacer, although he can perform a trot - he can canter. He could be improved with schooling, but would not be a suitable novice (learner) if they wanted to progress due to his being a pacer (although he is gentle and doesn't have a bad bone in his body). He is currently barefoot and would require hoof boots or shoes if used for riding. I have no tack for him as he is not currently ridden (and hasn't been for about 3 years), but I can provide some rugs, feed buckets, and other bits and bobs.
Health Issues
He will chew fencing if bored or on restricted grazing. All vaccinations are up to date, and he is checked annually by a vet. He stands nicely for vets/farriers. He has some cloudiness in his right eye from an injury as a youngester which has never changed and does not appear to affect his vision.
Ideal Home
The ideal home for Bill would be somewhere that he can spend most of the year grazing freely with the company of other horses/animals. He can live out all year, but would need access to a suitable shelter and rugging in the winter as he gets older. He is very friendly once he trusts you, and enjoys people petting and loving on him. So a home where he could have this attention would be ideal.
