How to keep your horse happy and healthy this summer.
Hydration: Making sure your horse has excess to fresh, clean water. Horses need to drink at least 20-55 litres per day and more. As horses need to drink more during summer months due to increase of sweating. Adding electrolyte supplements can help replenish minerals that have been lost due to sweating.
Shelter/Shade: Having excess to shelter and natural shade will help your horse keep cool. We all know that horses are smarter than we think and use their natural instincts to find these spots.
Fly control: Fly repellent will help keep your horse comfortable and protect them from flies. Fly masks and fly rugs can also be used to help protect them from being bitten and irritated. Moving horse manure will help reduce the amount of fly breeding grounds.
Riding hours: The best time to ride your horse on hot days are morning and evening. Before the sun rises at its highest peak and when the sun sets.
Pink noses: For those with horses that have pink noses or pink sensitive skin. Applying sun cream on the nose or where pink skin is showing. This will help protect horses from burning.
Hosing/Bathing: Also another great way to keep your horse cool and comfortable. Hosing them down or giving them a good bath.
